Why Should I Store Buttermilk Powder

Buttermilk powder is an awesome product!  It has a great shelf-life and can be used a million different ways.  Not everyone drinks buttermilk, like we often see in old movies, but buttermilk powder reconstitutes just like regular buttermilk from the dairy.  Its thick and creamy and adds a great tangy flavor to your favorite recipes.  Here are a few examples:

Buttermilk Pancakes
Buttermilk makes a great addition to pancake batter.  It makes them lighter and fluffier and gives them a buttery flavor.  Just replace a
1/2 cup of the liquid your recipe calls for with 1/2 cup of prepared buttermilk when you are making the batter.  Your family will love the "pancake house" flavor.

You can also add buttermilk to any bread recipe calling for milk.  The higher fat content helps baked goods melt in your mouth.  Try it the next time you  make biscuits, bread, or scones.

Buttermilk Ranch Dressing Dip
Homemade ranch dressing is a favorite at my house.  My kids love it on salad but they also like using it as a dip for veggies and chips.  Homemade ranch powder is easy to make, very inexpensive and has NO MSG!  Here's the recipe:

Ranch Powder Mix
4 tablespoons dried parsley
2 teaspoons dried dill weed
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
4 T Buttermilk Powder

Combine the spices in a food processor just to get thinks well mixed and chopped up a little more.  It helps it dissolve better.  Then add the buttermilk powder and mix it in with a wire whisk.  Store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.  That way it will keep for a long time.  Add 1 Tbsp to 1 cup of milk or buttermilk for dressing or 1 cup of Greek yogurt or sour cream for dip.

Cookie Salad
Cookie salad is a Nelson family favorite. It's like dessert but you can eat it as a side dish!  Its creamy, tangy flavors really marry well.  It is a great treat for summer gatherings and baby showers.

Large box instant vanilla pudding mix (I like french vanilla)
2 c. prepared buttermilk
1/2c Wip-it Powder
22 oz mandarin oranges, drained
20 oz crushed pineapple, drained
1 pkg fudge stripe cookies

Whip together wip-it powder with 1/2 cup of water until it becomes whipped topping.  Then whip in the buttermilk and the pudding mix until thick. Add the canned fruits.  Coarsely chop the cookies and stir them in.  Refrigerate until served. I like to add one diced ripe banana to mine right before I serve it.
