Rolling Bucket Washing Machine

This is a great way to wash the family laundry while traveling.   The movement of your car does all the work as you drive merrily along and when you get to your destination the laundry is done.

EQUIPMENT —

  • A 2-gallon, 5-gallon or 6-gallon bucket with a "gamma” lid, depending on the size of your family.  There are just two of us at home, so when we travel, I use the 2-gallon bucket.
  • Gama lids have a gasket ring that fits securely on the bucket and a screw on gasket lid that fits inside the outer ring.  The "gamma” lid makes the bucket leak-proof.  The screw-on lid is easy to remove.
  • A bar of Fels-Naptha soap and a cheese grater. Fels-Naptha soap is found in the laundry aisle of your favorite grocery store.  The grater is made by Faberware and was purchased at Wal-mart.

Step #1  PRE-TREAT CLOTHES: Pre-treat clothes by rubbing a bar of Fels-Naptha directly on the stains and place them in the bucket.  Fels-Naptha will take out most stains.

Step #2  WASHING PROCESS:
  • Add enough water to cover clothes with enough extra to allow the clothes to agitate.
  • Using the larger grate screen, grate about 1/4 c or less of soap into the container.  Put the soap in the bucket with the clothes and water.
  • Screw the lid tightly on the bucket.
  • Lay the bucket in-between the front and back seats of your car with the lid facing one set of seats.
  • As you drive the bucket will roll back and forth between the seats agitating the clothes.
Step #3 RINSING PROCESS:
  • When you make your next stop—wring out the clothes, replace the soapy water with clear water and continue the process to your next stop or to your final destination for the day.
  • Wring out the clothes and hang them on a line while camping, or in the shower or tub at a motel.

Being able to wash while you travel is a great way to save packing space.  You can cut down on the amount of clothes you need (especially underwear) and save money at the launder-mat at same time.
